भारत की स्वतंत्रता के बाद 1950 में संविधान लागू हुआ और एक लोकतांत्रिक व्यवस्था स्थापित हुई।

1947 से 1966 तक भारत में राजनीतिक स्थिरता रही और कांग्रेस पार्टी का वर्चस्व बना रहा।

परंतु 1970 के दशक में सामाजिक, आर्थिक और राजनीतिक परिस्थितियाँ बदलने लगीं —

आपातकाल समाप्त हुआ : 18 जनवरी 1977


चुनाव हुए : मार्च 1977 में

जनता पार्टी ने बहुमत प्राप्त किया।


मोरारजी देसाई भारत के पहले गैर-कांग्रेसी प्रधानमंत्री बने।
